Named after the French plant collector Dr. Marius Porte, who introduced this genus into cultivation in 1885. This genus consists only 7 species and 2 botanical varieties, which are all found in Brazil along the coastal region. There they grown in full sun in sand and on rocks.

Most of the species form broad, spreading, robust rosettes with stiff thickly spined leaves.
